The Green Scholars Initiative is the research arm of the Green Collection, which contains over 44,000 ancient items related to the transmission of the biblical text. The collection includes some of the earliest papyri and manuscripts of Scripture, and first editions of key biblical texts and research tools. Over thirty universities are involved in researching these items through professors, each mentoring students in the process. Eminent professors from around the world serve as Senior Scholars over groups of these local professors, and major lecture series are underway and three series of scholarly publications around the GSI project are forthcoming with Brill (Leiden). It was established by Pope Pius X with the Apostolic Letter Vinea Electa of May 7, 1909, in order to be "a center of higher studies for Sacred Scripture in the city of Rome and of all related studies according to the spirit of the Catholic Church.”
